In view of increasing distrust over infallibility of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) across political circles, especially after the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly poll results, Minister of State, IT, BT and Tourism Priyank Kharge demanded that the Election Commission (EC) throw open an EVM hackathon to the public to test its credibility.
He was addressing a media conference here on Tuesday. “The EC had thrown a hackathon challenge to counter allegations of tampering. But, the exercise was restricted to political parties, which don’t have experts competent enough to hack the machines. If the challenge is open to the public, companies, start-ups and individuals could participate,” he said. The Minister also said that he would write to the EC as the Chief Minister had agreed to it.
