The BJP has announced its candidates for the upcoming by-polls in Alwar and Ajmer cities of Rajasthan. While the party has given the ticket to Jaswant Singh Yadav for Alwar, it has named Ramswarup Lamba for Ajmer. The ruling party in the state has also named Shakti Singh Hada as its candidate for legislative assembly constituency polls in Mandalgarh. Last month, the Election Commission had announced byelections to the Lok Sabha constituencies of Alwar and Ajmer as well as Mandalgarh assembly seat in the state. While polling for these seats will be held on January 29, the result will be declared on February 1. The last date of filing nominations for candidates is January 10, while the date for scrutiny is January 11. Last dates of withdrawing names is January 15. The poll body had also announced that by-polls in West Bengal’s Uluberia parliamentary seat and Noapara Assembly seat will also be held simultaneously.
The BJP has named Manju Basu as its candidate for Noapara Assembly seat. The Model Code of Conduct came into effect in these places after the dates were announced. Commission had also decided to use Electronic Voter-Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) at the polling stations for the by-polls along with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). “the Adequate number of EVMs and VVPATs have been made available and all steps have been taken to ensure that the polls are conducted smoothly with the help of these machines,” ECI’s Principal Secretary Sumit Mukherjee had said in a statement. The Congress has fielded Karan Singh Yadav for Alwar parliamentary constituency.
The by-poll in Alwar necessitated after the death of BJP MP Mahant Chand Nath on September 17 following a prolonged illness. Saffron party’s MP from AjmerSanwar Lal Jat had collapsed during a meeting of party MLAs and MPs with BJP chief Amit Shah in Jaipur on July 22. He passed away at AIIMS in Delhi in August. The same month, BJP’s Mandalgarh MLA Kirti Kumari passed away while undergoing a treatment in Jaipur for influenza A (H1N1) or swine flu.While the state is scheduled to gon on Assembly polls later this year, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has already made a number of visits to the parliamentary seats and also announced several sops during her tours.
