The Action Alliance offered Governor Rochas Okorocha’s son-in-law, Uche Nwosu the governorship ticket. In this interview with EVEREST AMAEFULE, the Imo State Chairman of the party, Anthony Ahaneku, says the party is rooting for Atiku Abubakar for the presidential race
Your party, the Action Alliance, is in alliance with the ruling party, All Progressives Congress in Imo State. Is that a desperate move to grab power?
I will rather answer by asking if we are in any alliance. The Action Alliance, I would say, is a party that is very independent. What people call alliance is that some people from the APC, the ruling party in Imo State, moved into the Action Alliance. Such people include our governorship candidate, who fulfilled all righteousness and clinched our ticket.
What you see as an alliance is as a result of the mammoth crowd of friends, well-wishers and political friends that followed our candidate, Uche Nwosu, to the Action Alliance. If you say alliance, that is a very great alliance. These are people who still have sympathy for their party, the APC, but they are here to support our great son – Uche Nwosu.
Nwosu is a phenomenon. Even without the Action Alliance, if he had gone to any other party, they would still have followed him. The man is a character. Even if he was an independent candidate, he would make history.
What makes you think he is a phenomenon? Is it because he is a son-in-law to the sitting governor?
I am talking about his character. I am talking about his name. I have known him for over 14 years. He is a man if he tells you anything, his word is his bond. If he tells you anything, he goes ahead to do it. So, I see him as a man of integrity.
He is a very lucky man. He is a man with a great amount of the grace of God upon his life. Otherwise, a man from a low background would not be one that everyone would be following.
He entered into the family of a great man, Rochas Okorocha, He was not a governor when they began. They were like a father and a son. He had graduated before he met Rochas. As a graduate, he could stand on his own but providence took him to Okorocha’s family. From there, he started to learn the ropes and to grow.
It was through humility that he was able to pick the crown of the family. He is married to the first daughter of that family – the Princess of the Okorocha dynasty. It was a risk that he took that could have consumed his life but God favoured him.
You are talking about character. This man never worked in any other place and now, you want him to be governor of the state.
My dear brother, people learn every day. I am not of the school of thought that will not give young graduates an opportunity to prove themselves. A young lad that has just left school and you are putting a caveat that you are looking for people with seven-year experience. Where will they get that experience? That is a very bad. That is why we have kept our youths roaming the streets because we want experienced ones. Where will they get the experience?

Sir, we are talking about governorship position here.
Nobody was a governor before he became a governor. You become a governor by dint of hard work and a mix of luck. One day, you were small; then, you grew.
The presidential and National Assembly polls come up on Saturday. How is your party prepared for the elections?
We are fully prepared. We are putting finishing touches. We are doing a reappraisal of our strategies, considering the postponed elections. We have gone back to the drawing board. Suffice it to say that if the elections had held, I bet you, the Action Alliance would have swept the polls in Imo State, especially those that are running for National Assembly – somebody like Chima Anthony for Owerri senatorial zone.
Are you collaborating with the APC in the presidential race?
I want to assure you that in these coming elections, no one party will win any election. It has to be in collaboration. You collaborate with people; not even with a party. There are places that the Action Alliance will even vote for a PDP candidate. There are places that the AA will support the APC candidates. Even where APGA is good, we will collaborate with them.
You are supporting President Muhammadu Buhari?
My party has a stand on that. The stand of my party stands.
You are the party chairman in Imo State.
We don’t have a parallel party leadership in the state. We have a national leadership that oversees the states. The national executive met and approved that we should support the PDP in the presidential election.
Why are you supporting the PDP for the presidential race when your candidate for Imo governorship has sympathy for Buhari?
The national executive met and decided that the party should support the PDP in the presidential race. We were not part of the meeting but we have to follow suit at the state level because we are one party.
Your party seems to have different alliances here and there.
So many people are aligning with us because of the credible candidates that we have. We have a credible governorship candidate that even the clergy are clamouring for. I can assure you that over 47 parties in Imo State have collapsed into the AA because of the electable candidate – Uche Nwosu – that we have.
